Ottawa's Augmentt raises $18 million to help MSPs lock down Microsoft 365
Augmentt, an Ottawa company that helps managed service providers secure their clients' Microsoft 365 accounts, has raised $18 million in a Series A round led by New York growth equity firm Camber Partners, the company announced Nov. 10.
The raise matters for small and medium-sized businesses because many of them never touch their own Microsoft 365 security settings. They rely on an outside IT provider, and that provider often manages dozens or hundreds of separate tenants. Misconfigured tenants are a common entry point for email compromise and data theft.
What Augmentt sells
Augmentt's platform lets a managed service provider audit, configure and monitor security and compliance settings across many client tenants from one place. Its products include Secure Autopilot, Engage Autopilot, Intune Autopilot and a SaaS discovery tool, according to the company's announcement.
The company was founded in 2020 by chief executive Derik Belair and chair Gavin Garbutt, both former leaders at N-able, the MSP software company that SolarWinds bought in 2013 and spun off in 2021, BetaKit reported.
Plans
Augmentt said it will use the money to accelerate its product road map, expand sales and marketing and deepen partnerships. Garbutt said the company's mission is to give MSPs security automation, visibility and control across the Microsoft ecosystem and the broader cloud. Camber vice-president Duncan McGillivary pointed to the founders' industry experience as a reason for the investment.
The company has not disclosed revenue, headcount or customer numbers.
Why it matters
Ottawa has a long history in MSP software, and Augmentt is betting that the same channel can bring better Microsoft 365 hygiene to businesses that cannot afford in-house security staff. For small business owners, the practical question is whether their IT provider applies a consistent security baseline across every tenant it manages, including multifactor authentication, conditional access and external sharing controls.
What to do
- Ask your IT provider which Microsoft 365 security baseline it applies to your tenant and how often it checks for drift.
- Confirm that every account, including admin accounts, uses multifactor authentication.
