What is Drupal Advisory AV26-1047?
Released following Drupal's security bulletin (SA-CORE-2026-014), advisory AV26-1047 warns that multiple branches of Drupal Core contain a severe security flaw residing within the Field UI module.
While the core vulnerability cannot always be exploited out-of-the-box by core software alone, combined exploit paths involving common contributed modules create severe risks. Crucially, security researchers note that at least one known exploit path does not require user authentication, making it a prime target for malicious actors scanning the web for unpatched CMS installations.
Affected Drupal Core Versions
Administrators managing enterprise websites, portals, and content platforms need to verify their systems against the following vulnerable versions:
- Drupal Core prior to version 11.4.10
- Drupal Core prior to version 11.3.19
- Drupal Core prior to version 10.6.19
(Note: Older versions of Drupal below 10.6.x and 11.3.x are already end-of-life and lack official security support, leaving them entirely exposed if not immediately upgraded.)
Mitigation and Defense Strategies
The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, alongside international computer incident response teams (CIRTs), strongly urges website administrators and system operators to take immediate action:
- Apply Core Updates Immediately: Upgrade your Drupal core installation to the latest patched version (11.4.10, 11.3.19, 10.6.19, or newer) depending on your release branch.
- Leverage Drupal Steward: Sites protected by Drupal Steward receive automated defense shielding against known attack vectors. However, security experts emphasize that Drupal Steward protection is a temporary buffer and does not replace a full software patch, as new exploitation methods could emerge.
- Audit Contributed Modules: Review all active modules interacting with the Field UI or custom code paths that could inadvertently expose vulnerable functionality.
Why This Matters for Enterprise Cybersecurity
Drupal powers a significant share of high-traffic government, educational, and enterprise web infrastructure. Critical-severity RCE vulnerabilities allow threat actors to bypass security boundaries, execute arbitrary code, and potentially compromise the underlying server environment.
With advisories like AV26-1047 actively circulating, automated botnets are expected to scan and target unpatched websites. Immediate patching remains the single most effective defense to maintain operational integrity and data security.
