A ransomware attack shut down dozens of the city's services, including online payments and phone lines. Hamilton refused to pay and rebuilt its systems at a cost of more than $5.7 million; it said there was no indication personal information was stolen. Ontario's privacy commissioner later directed the city to notify people whose information was encrypted.
